Architecture in Japan – October 2017
October 18 – November 4 2017
Fully escorted by tour leader: Jo Tanaka-King
The Robin Boyd Foundation and Katachi Japan Cultural Tours welcome guests to this the first of our travel tours which will focus on the architecture, art and design of Japan.
Robin Boyd was a pioneer in recognising the importance of Japanese architecture and design. Through his books and journalism he introduced the Australian public and design professions to Japan. Boyd wrote two books on Japanese architecture: the widely acclaimed monograph Kenzo Tange (1962) and New Directions in Japanese Architecture (1968). He had a remarkable understanding and appreciation of Japanese architecture. He traveled in Japan on a number of occasions and the influence of Japanese architecture can be seen in his own work. Boyd designed the exhibits for the Australian Pavilion at the World Expo in Osaka (1970).
Upon reading the first draft of his manuscript, Tange wrote to Boyd: ‘I received this with pleasure and read through with great interest. Reading your article, I could not help but admire you for your deep understanding and correct criticism of my own work.’
This tour has been specially arranged by Jo Tanaka-King and the Robin Boyd Foundation to enable guests to visit some of Tange’s buildings which Boyd wrote about and may have visited, along with a wider selection of earlier and more recent buildings to provide a full appreciation and introduction to Japanese architecture today.
Kenzo Tange’s National Gymnasium, Tokyo. 1964 “Together with a number of other
important projects which Kenzo Tange carried out after 1959, the Olympic stadia
in Tokyo can be regarded as the culmination of his career, designed in 1960
and built in 1964, on a par with the highest achievements of the Japanese
tradition… — Udo Kultermann. Kenzo Tange: Works and Projects.
