Robin Boyd’s seminal Walsh Street house provides a fitting stage to elevate and celebrate the work of some of Australia’s most important design practitioners. The whole house will be activated in this ‘design within a design’ installation.
Visitors will be free to roam through the extraordinary rooms and spaces of Walsh Street, where they will discover significant pieces of Australian design history. Some of these objects will feel like they have always been there, while others traverse time bringing together designs from the 1930s to the present day.
Australian’s most celebrated designers and their work will be featured such as Grant and Mary Featherston, Clement Meadmore, and Marc Newson. Winners of the Prince Philip Prize for Australian Design such as the Wiltshire Staysharp knife, the Sabco timer tap, the Décor BYO wine cooler and up to 100 objects will be displayed in typical household locations and uses for visitors to discover and explore.
In this year of celebrating the centenary of Robin Boyd’s birth, curator, collector, and senior lecturer at Monash University Ian Wong pays homage to Boyd’s legacy and his commitment to the promotion of Australian Design by bringing together 100 iconic, delightful and sometimes surprising nuggets of Australia’s incredible design history.
