House Show exhibition viewing including ** [ ] artificial (intelligence) camera demonstration with Rowan Page + Jian Shin See.
The ** [ ] artificial (intelligence) camera is a creative tool for exploring the emerging intersection between generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and creative practices. Referencing the spontaneity and fun of retro instant cameras, you point the ‘camera’ towards something of interest, press the ‘shutter button,’ and an AI-generated image is instantly printed. GenAI tools are increasingly becoming both a threat to and part of the creative design process. Designers feel pressured to become prompt engineers, guiding AI systems to craft outputs. Yet, the text-based prompt interfaces of these systems don’t necessarily match the process of many creative practitioners. We set out to create an intuitive, natural, spontaneous, interface for exploring generative AI while giving the creatives agency in the process. Enabling artists/designers to get out from behind the computer and create inspiring ‘images’ and creative inspiration in the world.
Dr. Rowan Page is an Industrial Designer, Senior Research Fellow and ARC DECRA Fellow at Monash University. He is an award-winning Industrial Design practitioner working across diverse fields, from medical devices (eg. Cochlear), to mobility (General Motors), to creative technologies (SensiLab). Rowan’s research explores the role that design practice can play in advancing fundamental research toward impact in the community.
Jian Shin See is an Industrial Designer and Mechanical Engineer currently based in Melbourne, Australia. He enjoys making all sorts of things – from leathercraft and woodworking to 3D printing, microcontrollers, and PCB design.
