Bauhaus & Boyd Tour – 16 Sept 11am | SOLD OUT

Fri September 16, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm AEST

$25.00 – $45.00

Robin Boyd was born in 1919, the same year that Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany

The multi-disciplined Bauhaus was became famous for its approach to design, aspiring to combine aesthetics with everyday function. It was forced to close three times and moved to new cities, Weimar, Dessau and finally Berlin. The Nazis denounced the Bauhaus for its “degenerate art” and were determined to crack down on what they saw as foreign “probably Jewish” influences. However, it was instrumental in the emergence of Modernism and many of it’s directors, teachers and students became influential practitioners and exponents through the 20th century.

One of the most important contributions of the Bauhaus is in the field of modern furniture design, the perfect example being the invention of the Cantilever chair by Marcel Breuer. Early adopters of the Bauhaus ‘modernist’ ideas in Australia were Harry Seidler (ex Harvard student of Walter Gropius) and Robin Boyd. The Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ (RAIA) invited Walter Gropius to present at their Fourth Australian Architectural Convention in Sydney in 1954. Earlier the same year Robin Boyd had began corresponding with Gropius, who travelled to Melbourne after the Convention to meet him. It was the beginning of a long-distance friendship that lasted until Gropius’s death in 1969.

This exhibition features the TECTA furniture collection, with pieces designed by Bauhaus luminaries including Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe and Lily Reich. The collection is presented at Robin Boyd’s iconic Walsh Street house, where we expand on the relationship between Gropius and Boyd and the enduring influences and achievements of the Bauhaus on Australian modernism.
