Join architect Matt Goodman of MGAO at Walsh Street for an evening exploring his refined, place-responsive residential work along Victoria’s coast. Through the lens of two recent projects—his own Olive Street Cabin and the sensitively reimagined House in Anglesea, shortlisted in the Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) category at the 2025 Victorian Architecture Awards—Matt will discuss an approach that values modesty, material honesty, and a deep engagement with site. These homes reflect a quiet clarity and restraint, distilling coastal living into forms that are at once robust and intimate. In addition to his approach to design, Matt will share insights into process, context, and how architecture can gently anchor itself to landscape.
Matt Goodman | MGAO
Matt Goodman Architecture Office is a design studio committed to a thoughtful and context-driven approach to architecture. With a focus on collaboration and problem-solving, the practice carefully examines existing conditions to craft refined, responsive buildings that are both functional and beautiful. The studio brings clarity to complex briefs, distilling ideas through a process rooted in simplicity. Natural, robust materials and a restrained palette are central to their work, resulting in designs that are grounded, enduring, and quietly elegant.
Context forms the foundation of every project. The team explores site constraints and opportunities with rigour, considering landscape, views, vernacular, and function to design with precision and purpose. Their approach respects the surrounding environment, aiming to do more with less and allowing the landscape to take prominence. Matt Goodman Architecture Office employs tested methods, drawing on familiar forms and humble materials to create work that appears simple but is rich in detail. Their buildings are designed to support the lives and work of their clients with ease—spaces that feel intuitive, calm, and connected.
