Join us at Walsh Street to welcome Juan Miró from Miró Rivera Architects (Austin, Texas) as our first speaker at Walsh Street this year for Reflections on City and Nature.
Nature has profoundly influenced the development of the built environment across America, serving as a constant thread weaving together the region’s history and storytelling to the present day. Miró Rivera Architects, for over two decades, have crafted a distinguished body of work that celebrates this relationship. Their designs blend art and architecture in ways that honor history, engage the urban fabric, and harmonise with the natural world.
This lecture delves into the innovative contributions of Miró Rivera Architects, placing their projects within a global framework of ideas surrounding nature, urbanism, and historical continuity. It will highlight Austin as a modern “Arcadia.” This concept—a harmonious landscape where beauty and nature converge—offers a profound perspective on Austin’s evolving character and its deep connection to place and heritage.
Juan Miró was born in Barcelona and grew up in Madrid, Spain. After studying architecture at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, he won a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Yale University from 1989-91. Juan worked in New York City from 1991-96 and has been based in Austin, Texas since 1997, combining his academic and professional careers. He is the Dick Clark Chair in Architecture at the School of Architecture of the University of Texas at Austin and the founder of award-winning firm Miró Rivera Architects. The firm’s first monograph entitled Miro Rivera Architects: Building a New Arcadia was published in 2020.
