SOLD OUT | Open Day Northcote Houses: LLDS + MA+Co

Sun September 15, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm AEST

The 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards Open Day will explore two architects’ approaches to testing ideas by adapting tight urban infill plots to create their own homes in Northcote. Thoughtfully underpinned by craftsmanship and care in their construction, innovation is present in both residences. LLDS House embraces local digital manufacturing and materials research. At the same time, MA+Co House utilises common materials and pragmatic repetition.

LLDS created a two-bedroom dwelling in an underutilised tandem car parking space, tackling the 2.5m level difference across the site; the responding scheme elevates from the ground to form a roof garden. Advanced manufacturing processes, including CNC milled formwork for in-situ concrete and robotically inscribed blockwork, establish the highly textured concrete walls this fluid form provides thermal mass and reduces flutter echo.

MA+Co transformed an unpromising 3m-wide site flanked by a laneway easement and drive-through bottle shop into a comfortable, multi-generational, all-electric residence. Common materials – a steel frame, standardised windows, and Colorbond cladding allow eventual dismantling and reuse, creating an adaptable yet distinctive home.

LLDS’s Northcote House was shortlisted for the Interior Architecture, Residential Architecture – Houses (New), Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) and Sustainable Architecture categories and received an Award for Sustainable Architecture at the 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards.

MA+Co’s Northcote House was shortlisted for the Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) at the 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards.

Our Open Days underpin our mission to further the legacy of Robin Boyd by offering access for the public to explore and understand architectural projects of outstanding merit. Since 1929, the Victorian Architecture Awards have enabled peer recognition of best practice in the field and inspired others to continue striving to positively shape communities through architecture.

This event is taking place on Wurundjeri Country.

LLDS is a design and architectural practice that extends design and craft sensibility through digital technologies. They make architecture that engages with everyday activities through materials. They believe that architecture should be ethical, generous, sustainable and responsive. They design through spatial, material and narrative making, exploring construction processes and digital media using robotics to virtual reality. Established in 2012, LLDS is a group of architects, designers, researchers, technologists, and makers led by David Leggett and Paul Loh; both are architects registered in Australia and the UK, respectively. Both partners are educators and have led design workshops and lectured in Australia, Sweden, Italy, China, Canada, and the UK.

The practice provides full architectural services and operates on the scale of the city, building, interior, and furniture. Their works have been exhibited and received awards in Australia and the UK. Their research in material practice has been published in international journals and discussed at international forums. We make new tools for robotic fabrication, including patent technology that reduces waste in concrete panel fabrication.

MA+Co is a practice built on 30 years of dedication to architecture and design by Principal and owner Karen Alcock and her team past and present. Since MA+Co’s emergence as MAA in 2008 the studio has strived to enrich the community. Accomplished in their quality, considered projects and commitment to mentoring staff. The addition of Associate Director Rachael McNally, with Principal Karen Alcock, ushers in a new phase at the studio with the dynamic duo at the helm. Buoyed by their joint endeavour to support each other and the team, tapping into their respective experiences; together they have nurtured MA+Co into the refined studio that stands proud today.

MA+Co define themselves by their perseverance to create thoughtful spaces for clients and the environment, a studio capable of navigating the nuance required to construct sustainable, considered designs. In a fast-changing world, the studio embraces and exploits construction complexities to find delight in the ordinary.
