Drawing inspiration from its European antecedents and the success of the Commons by the same architects. Nightingale 1 is the first iteration
of a replicable triple bottom line development model, with goals of social, economical and environmental sustainability realised through architecture and end-user involvement.
Located opposite their earlier building, The Commons, the building sits quietly yet assertively within its urban context, a run-down, formerly industrial zone between the railway and Sydney Road. The design extends the street into the building via an entry lane threading between a social enterprise cafe and a tenancy for an architectural practice, linking the street with a leafy fernery and vertical circulation. Use by both public and and residents is encouraged with bench seating, mini planted verges, beautifully laid cobble paving and exposed services; raw but warmly people focussed. – 2018 Victorian Architecture Awards Catalogue
