Baracco + Wright Lecture: Spatial Continuity- A lesson from Robin Boyd in the name of integration between architecture and landscape

Thu October 31st @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$20 – $40

To celebrate the centenary of his birth, Mauro Baracco and Louise Wright  will discuss some works of Australian architect Robin Boyd (1919-1971) and his advocacy for an architecture that speaks to Australian conditions and sensibilities. His legacy continues in more contemporary works yet also prompts a way forward for architecture, particularly in relationship to the landscapes they inhabit through a quality of continuous space found in his work where the buildings are spatially reliant and sympathetic to the places they occupy.

Mauro and Louise, who are also members of the Boyd Circle founding group, will be available to talk with the audience after their presentation and sign copies of their book on Robin Boyd that will be for sale at the event.

Baracco+Wright Architects, founded in 2004, seek opportunities to position architecture in a catalytic role that places the architect in the role of strategic thinker across disciplinary boundaries. Louise Wright is a practising architect and director of Baracco+Wright Architects. She has a PhD in Architecture from RMITUniversity. Mauro Baracco is a practising architect and a director of Baracco+Wright Architects. He has a PhD in Architecture from and is also an Associate Professor at RMIT University in the School of Architecture and Urban Design, Melbourne, Australia where he was the Deputy Dean of Landscape Architecture (2013-15).

They also publish their research and design, including their book Robin Boyd: Spatial Continuity, Routledge 2017, and Repair: Architecture actively engaging with the repair of the places it is part of, Actar, 2018. They have won several architectural awards including Australian Institute of Architects Kevin Borland Award for Small Architecture and the Harold Desbrowe Annear Award for Residential Architecture. In collaboration with the artist Linda Tegg, Baracco+Wright were the Creative Directors of the Australian Pavilion 2018 exhibition at the Biennale di Architettura di Venezia with the theme Repair. Still in collaboration with Linda, they have been invited to exhibit an installation at the 2019 Milan Triennale “Broken Nature” (01 March-01 September 2019). They have lectured in and taught architectural design at RMIT University in Undergraduate and Master programs in Architecture and Landscape Architecture since 1996, and at Monash University. They focus their teaching activity on the potential role of architecture beyond the discreet object with integrated responses involving interior, urban, landscape and infrastructure design. They have been an invited guest at national and international Architecture schools, including: UTS Sydney; Turin Polytechnic, Italy; Milan Polytechnic, Italy; Mendrisio Academy of Architecture, Switzerland; and National University of Singapore.
