Wayne Crothers: Informing Modernity in Japan

Join Wayne Crothers, Senior Curator, Asian Art, National Gallery of Victoria, who will delve into the critical historical influences and events that informed the modern Japanese design aesthetic and lifestyle.

Wayne is is Senior Curator, Asian Art at the National Gallery of Victoria. He has engaged in two years research at Kyoto Seika University, completed a two-year Master of Fine Art Degree at Tama Art University, Tokyo, has lectured for six years at Musashino Art University, Tokyo and held guest lecturing residencies at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China; Australian National University, Canberra; Lafayette College, Pennsylvania, USA and the Joan Miro Foundation, Spain. Since 2009, he has been Curator of Asian Art at the National Gallery of Victoria and was appointed Senior Curator of Asian Art at the NGV in 2017. He oversees the NGV Asian collection and has curated a number of significant exhibitions, including Tea and Zen (2010); Bushido: Way of the Samurai (2014); Negoro: Japanese Medieval Lacquer (2014); Bamboo: Tradition in Contemporary Form (2016); Buddha’s Smile (2017); Hokusai (2017); Visions of Paradise: Indian Court Paintings (2018); Terracotta Warriors: Guardian of Immortality/Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape (2019); Japanese Modernism (2020); Golden Shells and the Gentle Mastery of Japanese Lacquer (2021); Transforming Worlds: Change and Tradition in India (2022); and China – The Past is Present (2022).
