Join us on a journey through a slice of South Yarra with our expertly curated walking tour to discover the precinct’s diverse architectural streetscape.
This precinct holds a remarkable legacy of the peoples of the Kulin nation, and post-colonial architects, landscape designers, wealthy landowners and notable residents. The diversity of architectural styles, with outstanding heritage examples from early colonial to modernism, makes for a fascinating streetscape.
It’s the neighbourhood that Robin Boyd and his family settled in the late 50’s, in Robin’s experimental and iconic home.
Many other leading architects contributed to the rich architectural tapestry of South Yarra include Reed & Barnes,Walter Buckhurst, Walter & Richard Butler, Anketell Henderson, Marcus Martin, Harold Desbrowe-Annear, Yuncken Freeman, and Neil Clerehan. A number of prominent landscape designers also helped to shape the area, including William Guilfoyle, Edna Walling and Ellis Stones.
Throughout our journey, we will reference Boyd’s critique of architectural styles, efforts to preserve built heritage, and the appreciation of existing landscapes, such as the retention of site materials and vegetation.
Our walking tour is approximately 2.5km and takes up to 2 hours. It is very leisurely paced, but does involve an uphill section of several hundred meters. Therefore, moderate fitness levels are required by attendees.

Before you book, please note:
- Walking Tours commence at the Separation Tree Rest House, Royal Botanic Gardens and commence at the advertised time. If you are late, you will have to catch-up with the group.
- Attendees under 16 years are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
- Please make us aware if booking children on the tour by email at: information@robinboyd.org.au
- Tickets are refundable up to 72 hours prior to the event.
- Walks may be postponed due to extreme weather events, in which case ticket holders may obtain a refund or be offered an alternative tour date
- Tickets may be exchanged as long as the purchaser advises us of the new attendee’s name via email.
