SOLD OUT Evenings with DADo: Some Kind of Heaven

Tue September 24, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm AEST

$20 – $30

Join DADo for an evening screening of Some Kind of Heaven followed by a talk by Kirsten Bevin. With Some Kind of Heaven, first-time feature director Lance Oppenheim cracks the manicured facade of The Villages, America’s largest retirement community – a massive, self-contained utopia located in Central Florida. Behind the gates of this palm tree-lined fantasyland, Some Kind of Heaven invests in the dreams and desires of a small group of Villages residents – and one interloper – who are unable to find happiness within the community’s pre-packaged paradise. With strikingly composed cinematography, this candy-coloured documentary offers a tender and surreal look at the never-ending quest for finding meaning and love in life’s final act.

We’re thrilled to be joined on the evening by artist and strategic urban designer Kirsten Bevin, who will be giving an introductory talk sharing her research in to how Australia’s housing industry responds to an ageing population, and the way industries engage in the politics, problems, solutions, meanings and beliefs about what a ‘good old age’ is.

Kirsten is a generative artist. Their code-based work explores the opportunities for viewers to interact with systems, and the potentials for story within the algorithm. They also research, practice and write about housing and ageing, urbanism, society and art. Kirsten’s 2021 Doctorate of Philosophy PhD Dissertation investigated how Australia’s housing industry responds to an ageing population, and the way industries engage in the politics, problems, solutions, meanings and beliefs about what a ‘good old age’ is. Alongside their research, Kirsten is a strategic urban designer, working on long-term large-scale precinct development to support state policy, having previously worked in visualisation and creative technology directing videos and digital applications to help explain urban change and infrastructure.
